From basic “smartphones” to future foldable devices, knowing where to start when buying a new phone can be daunting.

However, if you want a device that can do it all without breaking the bank, Google's latest offering might be the perfect choice.

The tech giant has launched a new budget smartphone called the Google Pixel 10a, costing just a fraction of Google's most advanced phones.

The Pixel 10a retails for just £499, saving you £300 compared to the Pixel 10 while packing many of the same features.

I tested the Google Pixel 10a and was amazed by the array of high-tech features packed into this affordable smartphone.

Google has launched a new budget smartphone called the Google Pixel 10a, costing a fraction of its most advanced models.

Our Verdict

For those on a budget, the Google Pixel 10a is an excellent smartphone.

Priced at £499, it's £100 cheaper than Apple's new iPhone 17e and £300 less than Google's top-tier Pixel 10.

Thanks to its dual-camera system and several AI-powered photo tools, it's perfect for everyday use—though it lacks some of the editing tools found on pricier options.

The large 5100 mAh battery delivers over 30 hours of battery life, making it ideal if you hate carrying a charger like I do.

Available in a stunning array of colors, this phone appeals to younger buyers seeking a new device without breaking the bank.

How do we test?

We evaluate all smartphones identically, subjecting them to a series of tests designed to assess performance, usability, design, and value for money.

Every product we review undergoes the same rigorous testing, empowering you to make informed purchasing decisions for your next major buy.

Google Pixel 10a Review

Performance

Considering the Pixel 10a is a “budget” smartphone, it boasts an impressive array of features.

Of course, one of the main things most people care about is the camera.

Aspiring photographers will be pleased to know the Pixel 10a's snapper is more than capable of handling your Instagram needs.

This phone features a dual-lens system consisting of a 48-megapixel main lens and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens.

For close-ups, you can zoom in up to 8x while maintaining stunning clarity, and the ultra-wide lens lets you fit everyone into group shots.

Admittedly, it's not as impressive as the Pixel 10, which offers up to 20x zoom, though 8x zoom should suffice for most casual photographers.

The Google Pixel 10a is one of the most affordable smartphones I've encountered. I opted for the Lavender color, a purple hue perfect for showcasing on Instagram.

Google Pixel 10a: Key Specs

Colors: Lavender, Raspberry, Mist, Obsidian

Display: 6.3 inches

Dimensions: 6.1 inches x 2.9 inches x 0.4 inches

Battery: 5100mAh

Camera: 48MP + 13MP dual rear system, 13MP selfie

Price: £499 for 128GB, £499 for 256GB

Beyond its capable camera, this phone comes loaded with Google's popular photo editing tools.

The “Add Me” tool, first introduced in the Pixel 9 series, lets you use AI to insert yourself into photos, while “Auto Best Shot” combines similar photos into one image where everyone looks their best.

However, other tools missing from the Pixel 10 include Auto Defocus, Video Defocus, and Zoom Enhancement.

Therefore, while the Pixel 10a's camera is excellent for everyday use, you might prefer a higher-end model if you plan to do advanced editing.

Beyond the camera, arguably the next most important feature is the battery.

The Pixel 10a packs an impressive 5,100 mAh battery, which is actually larger than the Pixel 10's 4,970 mAh battery.

While your actual battery life depends on usage, Google claims you can expect over 30 hours of use.

I fully charged the Pixel 10a a few days before testing it and didn't need to charge it once! If you hate lugging around a charger like I do, that's fantastic.

For storage, you have two options – 128GB or 256GB.

As I mentioned when discussing the camera, this is plenty for most people's photos and videos, though if you like storing large files locally, you might want to opt for the higher-end storage alternative.

Design

The Google Pixel 10a is one of the most affordable smartphones I've seen.

I chose Lavender, the most Instagram-worthy shade of purple.

But if that's not your style, the other three options—Berry, Mist, and Obsidian—are equally eye-catching.

Featuring a brushed aluminum frame and recycled plastic back panel, this phone also feels great in the hand.

Measuring 6.1 inches x 2.9 inches x 0.4 inches and weighing just 183 grams, it's compact enough for one-handed use and easily fits in your pocket.

Another truly standout design feature (or rather, lack thereof!) is its completely flat back.

Most modern smartphones feature a camera bump that protrudes, causing the phone to wobble when placed on a surface.

In contrast, the Pixel 10a's back is completely flat, with the camera module seamlessly integrated into the phone's rear panel.

While this may seem simple, it delivers a premium feel I've never encountered in high-end competitors.

Exceptional Value

The Pixel 10a arguably offers the best value for money among current smartphones.

Priced at £499, it's £100 cheaper than Apple's new iPhone 17e and £300 less than Google's flagship Pixel 10.
